September-December 2010 Pottery Classes

A small sampling of student work. And some in an earlier post.

I've not set the exact dates for September-December 2010, but that will be my next 10 week session. Open registration will start in August 2010 for those.

As interest demands I will have a summer workshop and continue to teach individual or semi-private sessions by appointment.

Until then, take a look at our last day of class of my last 10 week session. We topped it off with a pit fire!

Pit Fire, June 22nd Seattle with Barbara Dunshee and her students

There were 20+ pieces in the pit fire, but I was able to photograph this small sampling. These are unscrubbed and untreated and already show very nicely. They were first bisqued to cone 06.

Pit Fired Piece (Elizabeth's slab and texture bowl). Unglazed porcelain, fired to cone 6 (usually one fires pit bound pieces to bisque temps, but this was a late comer and needed to join the cone 6 glaze fire I was doing). Curiously, this and at least one other cone 6 piece in the pit fire showed cracking (as did some cone 06 pieces). But the luster was quite stunning.

The pit was already smoldering when we arrive so Jan takes on the embers. We need a cold pit to start.

Nestled atop the sawdust is a (barely visible) square of chicken wire, to keep the pots from sinking fully down into it. We start to layer in the pots, already wrapped with materials and finished off with newspaper.

Getting close to 7pm, our ignition time, so all are quickly stuffing balled up newspaper in between pots wrapped in newspaper.

SURPRISE IGNITION! A stray ember has ignited our newspaper and we've got no kindling down! Time to load it, FAST!

Dash to load lots of kindling so we get a good intense burn going rather than a quick poof of just newspaper!

We had to throw in lots of kindling very quickly as the paper ignited unexpectedly (previous fire ember). It was reclaimed, untreated cedar and burned very quickly. The larger wood we had was also very nicely aged so that burned quickly. Being that we could only fire a little more than an hour that's what we needed. A quick burn.

Adding a log occasionally, but we can only let it burn about an hour (our time constraints, not the pit's) before having it die down. Time to eat, back at the other grill.

Ceramic Bells, stringing them up, by Barbara Dunshee

This video is the FINAL installment of my ceramic bell making lesson. It shows you one way of stringing the bells together. Hope this helps!

NOTES:
-I used 20lb test fishing line for stringing the clapper to the stop. Other strings will do, but you don't want them too stiff.
-I used thin copper wire as a threader for getting the soft ribbon through the holes in bell and stop.
-If the holes are too small for your ribbon, you can use string between the stop and the ribbon and tie the ribbon to the top of the bell (of course it can get a little trickier if the holes are too small for the ribbon to pass through).

These three short video snippets below are a continuation of my ceramic bell making lesson. Previously on this blog Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 all deal with creating the outer bell shape.
In Part 4a I'm demonstrating how great these bells sound when finished. 4b, I demonstrate the sound making "clapper" of the bell. 4c I make the clay bead that holds the clapper at the right level inside the bell. Part 5, next Tuesday, will be stringing all the fired pieces together.

My first foray into a short lesson using still images in a blog setting. If something is confusing or you're dying to see more images of a particular step let me know. This lesson is only through the greenware (unfired) stage of the bell shape itself.

100 bells!

I do like the sound given by ceramic bells, so am creating some delicate ringers for the holiday season.

The one I'm demonstrating below is without texture, but you can add texture right before you roll it into a cone, just after step 7.

Step 1: Use a rolling pin to flatten approx 1/4 lb. blob of clay to 1/8" thick. I'm rolling onto porous and flexible canvas.

Step 2: Using a 4-1/2" lid as your template, cut out circle using a needle tool.

Step 3:

Fold circle in half, crease the seam, and gently tear in half. Store one of the halves under plastic while you work with just one at a time.

Step 4: With rolling pin, flatten about a 1/4" of the straight edge.

Step 5: Brush slip along one half of that top edge. I use a toothbrush to simultaneously roughen the edge for better grip.

Step 6: Form 1/2 circle into a cone shape, tucking the slipped edge underneath the other edge as it comes around.

Step 7: Gently pinch the overlapping edges together to close the circle

Step 8: Flatten the top point of your cone shape by squishing the point with your fingertip.

Step 9: Using balls of varying sizes (exact sizes not important, but you can see the sizes I use here) on sticks we're going to shape the bell. You can also keep the basic cone shape you have here and skip to step 13.

Step 10: insert smallest ball into cone, "swish" it around the inside to start to stretch the "shoulder" of the bell.

Step 11: Move onto the next bigger ball, insert and stretch to shape the belly of the bell.

Step 12: Move onto the last and biggest ball. This ball helps to finish off the "hem" of the bell's "skirt". I tuck the clay hem very gently around the midsection of the ball. I don't want to lock the ball into the clay.

Step 13: Using a needle tool, drill a hole in the flattened top of the bell. Don't make it too tiny as you'll need to thread a string through that hole when you go to add the clapper and ribbon handle (next lesson! stay tuned for that).

Step 14: Set it aside to dry until it's ready to fire.

Final glaze firing!

The final glaze firing gets unloaded Wednesday morning, April Fools Day. No really! I'll need time to photograph some pieces in the morning. Everything will be outside under the deck by late afternoon. Bring whatever you need to pack it all home safely. Thanks for a wonderful session all. pottery pick up!

Hi All,
Everything will be ready for pickup this Sunday, December 14th. If the studio is not open then all will be placed under cover on a table next to the studio. Bring your own packing up materials.

Some great pieces and I'm hoping to get photographs before you whisk them away. Thanks for a wonderful session everybody!

Anything not picked up this weekend goes down in the old kiln shed. Please pick up within two weeks. After that it goes up-for-grabs or donated. Bring a flashlight if you come after dark.

Clay Recycling

When we make things out of clay we get slop, dry trimmings, and more than needs a little processing before being used again. If I didn't recycle it I'd have to pay to get rid of it. I'm limited on space and don't want to spend a lot of time recycling as that would make the clay more expensive than it's worth. So I've developed a system that works for me and my 20+ students. We save all slop, and all dry trimmings. Slops goes in 5 gal buckets. Trimming are left fluffy and allowed to get bone dry in bisqued pots.

Then they are combined, left to sit a few hours, then stirred with a paddle, left to sit a little longer and water is decanted off the top, using a 24 oz ladel. Then about 10 ladles full are scooped into a trug (a flexible bucket with handles). I add an 1/8 cup of bleach, stir again. Because the trug is flexible it's squashed into a giant pouring spout and poured into a waiting canvas bag, suspended open by its handles from big hooks.

These are on a makeshift sawhorse. The canvas bag are closed tightly by bungy cords. They bags are moved down the line to smaller "s" hooks.

They will remain hanging like this until they feel firm enough to open up and pull the clay from the bag without it sticking to the sides. It is an art knowing just the right time.
